#49: Kelly at the Wedding

My best friend’s wedding was a big deal for me, especially since it was my first time in a wedding. Though I was a greeter instead of a bridesmaid, I took my role very seriously, choosing the right dress and accessories and even getting my hair done with the wedding party. Fortunately, during the big day my irksome heels did not cause me to spill the important celebratory bubbles or slow me down at all. Consider this a big win for me for once even if Kelly was not as lucky.

#48: Kelly’s Graduation Contemplation

Graduating from high school two years after I did, I was not sure how attending college would change my brother. Being in the same gymatorium reminded me of my own high school graduation and how much I had changed since I started attending college. Now writing about this comic thirteen years later, I can only think how much I have changed since I graduated from college. Most of the changes for the better, at least.

N.A. Humor Date

This was a great story from my college friend Sara about how her brother took his dates to specific restaurants so he could watch sports on TV behind his talking dates. My brother never actually did this, but I couldn’t resist drawing this story and using Seth as the protagonist. In any case, it does seem to explain why my fellow college classmates skipped dating altogether and went straight into hooking up.

#46: Kelly and the Wheel of Majors!

As our sophomore year was rounding to a close, my friends and I had changed from “Undecided” majors to having real majors. In real life, we took more time to decide what we wanted to do rather than relying on a game of chance like this Wheel of Majors.

Everyone had a specific plan for their lives and how their majors would come into play. For example, my dream was to work in book publishing so English was a natural fit. And though some people did (and sadly still do) make fun of me for majoring in English, I enjoyed my classes and, even though we were in a recession after our graduation, I was able to get a job in my field. So no re-spin necessary for me.

Kelly #45: Tidiness is for People Who’ve Finished Their Homework

Even all of these years later, I remember how easy it was to let my dorm room become a pit of chaos when I had to spend all of my free time doing homework, going to classes, and working at my part-time job. This definitely looks like my dorm room with the random objects on top of and under the bed, posters coming off of the walls, and several electronics plugged into the same power strip. Sadly, my apartment sometimes gets like this during very busy times at work and in my personal life but at least now I have a partner to help with the cleaning.

Kelly #44: On Sexism in Fairy Tales

This comic seems still very relevant in 2021 as we look back at films from our childhood with a critical lens. When I have time, I enjoy listening to the Bechdel Cast podcast and they have opened my eyes about the anti-feminist issues in some of my favorite films. This type of criticism is vital to evaluate how non-white, non-male people are portrayed in media. But I have learned from the podcast that even though a film can be very flawed and has a lot it needs to do to make things right, you can still personally enjoy it. If you have the chance, definitely check out the Bechdel Cast‘s episode on The Princess Bride to see if the hosts agree with Kelly’s friend’s assessment of the film.

Kelly #43: Kelly at FitSpace

A comic about working out just in time for New Year’s Resolutions. It does seem to be a conundrum that in order to start working out you need to be in good enough shape to be able to break a sweat without dying.

It didn’t help that I never actually took any fitness classes in college but eventually, slowly, I was able to work up to being in better shape. To be honest, now during quarantine I am more out of shape like Kelly because I cannot go to the gym. Maybe this comic will inspire me to work out more on my own in the new year. Stranger things have happened.
